Who's behind Classica

About Us

Portrait of Landon Olson

Hi, I'm Landon, the creator of Classica. I'm a Latin student and developer based in the San Francisco Bay Area with a passion for making education more accessible through technology. I built Classica to provide a free, ad-free resource that helps students and teachers learn Latin through clear explanations, engaging practice, and thoughtfully designed learning tools.

My Background

I first encountered Latin in sixth grade to fulfill my middle school's language requirement. I originally signed up because my dad thought it would be interesting to learn more about how Latin shaped the English language. I was also excited by the chance to explore the history, mythology, and culture behind the language, so it seemed like an easy choice.

As I worked through middle school, Latin quickly became one of my favorite subjects, and I decided to continue studying it in high school. During my freshman year, I went through a huge Duolingo phase and naturally gave its Latin course a try. While I enjoyed using the app, I was disappointed that it rarely explained why Latin worked the way it did. It introduced new concepts without really teaching the grammar behind them, making it difficult to build a strong foundation. For me, it felt much more like a vocabulary trainer than a true language-learning tool.

Why I Built Classica

That Duolingo experience made me realize there was a gap in Latin education. Unless you're enrolled in a Latin class with a great teacher, it's surprisingly difficult to find modern, comprehensive learning resources. That's where the idea for Classica began. I first started working on it during the summer before my junior year, but progress was slow as I figured out what the app should become. Once the school year started, the project was put on hold for a while. Then, the summer before my senior year, I picked it back up with a much clearer vision and started making rapid progress. What began as a small summer project has grown into Classica, and I'm excited to finally share it with other Latin learners.
